Data Curation & Management Toolkit: Cite Data

This guide is a brief introduction to Data Curation and the HKUST Data Management Services

How to Cite Data

The preferred format for rendering a DataCite citation for human readers using the mandatory properties:

  • Creator (PublicationYear): Title. Publisher. (resourceTypeGeneral). Identifier

If there is a version, please include.  It's very important to include when citing software. For example:

  • Creator (PublicationYear): Title. Version. Publisher. (resourceTypeGeneral). Identifier

DataCite prefers that DOI names are displayed as linkable, permanent URLs, for example, “
https://doi.org/10.1038/sdata.2016.18

But, the Identifier may appear in its original format. If the original format is chosen, be sure to include the characters “doi:" prepended to the Identifier as in “doi:10.1038/sdata.2016.18.

Examples (via DataCite)

Irino, T; Tada, R (2009): Chemical and mineral compositions of sediments from ODP Site 127-797. V. 2.1. Geological Institute, University of Tokyo. (dataset). https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.726855
Denhard, Michael (2009): dphase_mpeps: MicroPEPS LAF-Ensemble run by DWD for the MAP D- PHASE project. World Data Center for Climate. (dataset.). https://doi.org/10.1594/WDCC/dphase_mpeps

Cite Data from DataSpace @ HKUST

Citing DataSpace@HKUST

For datasets published in DataSpace@HKUST, the system provides citation in this format:
Creator(s), Publication Year, “Dataset Title”, Identifier, Data Repository, Version, [Universal Numerical Fingerprint]

Example:
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Library, 2015, “Wi-Fi Connection in HKUST Library”,https://dx.doi.org/10.14711/dataset/RQXRQB, DataSpace@HKUST, V1 [UNF:6:vtIJGn8nA+fEACtFfsPHbA==]

Users can also download citation to EndNote XML or RIS Format for ease of management.
