This guide is developed for LABU 2052 students, to help you learn about credible research for your marketing case

PEST - Social

Social factors include the demographic and cultural aspects of the external macro environment. These factors affect customer needs and preference. Some social factors include:

  • Demographics (Age/Sex distribution)
  • Lifestyle trends
  • Consumer buying patterns
  • Ethnic/religious factors
  • Health consciousness

While many demographics and social statistics/indicators are accessible free of charge via government sites, the following tools are suggested for your project.


Passport (https://lbdiscover.hkust.edu.hk/bib/991003622279703412) (HIGHLY RECOMMMENDED)

Previously called Passport GMID, the database provides volume and value sales statistics for consumer, industrial and services markets across 82 countries worldwide. It also provides a wide range of data on business enterprise including consumer market sizes, consumer lifestyles, companies and brands as well as market research reports, country profiles and socio-economic statistics.


  1. Select Countries & Consumers > Consumer Trends and Lifestyles on the menu bar.

  2. In the Consumer Trends and Lifestyle menu, open the Analysis Finder drop-down menu where you can find a number of analysis and reports. Notes: 

    Consumer Lifestyle provides the most detailed description of the culture and habits of a country's population.

    Consumers in 2020 contains additional lifestyle analysis, with a look to the future.

    Country Pulse contains brief entries on wide ranging topics unique to the particular country.


  3. Specify the Geographies and hit GO.

  4. Note: besides Consumer Trends and Style, other sections including Business EnvironmentIncome and Expenditure, Population and Homes are also recommended for your project.
