Tools for Open-Science Research: What is Open Science?

Open Science is more than making your papers or research data open access. According to the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science adopted in Nov 2021, the idea of Open Science is: 

• increases scientific collaborations and sharing of information for the benefits of science and society. 
• makes multilingual scientific knowledge openly available, accessible and reusable for everyone.
• opens the processes of scientific knowledge creation, evaluation and communication to societal actors beyond the traditional scientific community.

The Recommendation also describes key pillars for Open Science:

1. Open scientific knowledge
2. Open science infrastructures
3. Science communication
4. Open engagement of societal actors
5. Open dialogue with other knowledge systems

In this guide, we highlight and promote a number of tools that support Open Science and serve the needs of various tasks during a research project life cycle.

Note: 

1. The lists of tools are not exhaustive and are updated on a regular basis. When selecting tools for inclusion, as far as subscription model is concerned, we prioritize on highlighting tools that are free/freemium and open source, or those that HKUST already has a subscription. The tools are listed in alphabetical order.
2. The six phases in the research life cycle are constructed based on Bianca Kramer and Jeroen Bosman's work on "Innovations in Scholarly Communication" under a CC-BY 4.0 License.
