Bloomberg Professional

This guide is designed to cover the basics of navigating through Bloomberg Professional, and retrieving financial news and information.

Bloomberg Tickers

Every financial security (e.g. stock, index, warrant, economic indicator, etc) is identified by a unique Bloomberg ticker, followed by the "Yellow" market sector key.

For instance: DJI <INDEX><GO>, where:

DJI = Bloomberg ticker for Dow Jones Industrial Average Index

<INDEX> = Yellow Market Key (F10=Index)

<GO> = The Enter key

How to Find Bloomberg Tickers

There are two ways to find Bloomberg tickers:

Smart Search

Simply enter the company name (e.g. HSBC) or keyword (e.g. US Treasury) will give you the most relevant results, then look for your results by categories such as Functions or Securities

Ticker Lookup

You can also find Bloomberg Tickers by Mnemonics, i.e. <Market Sector Yellow Key> + TK.
For example, to find all corporate bonds issued by Hutchison Whampoa,

  1. Press <F3> follow by <TK> (CORP TK)
  2. Enter partial ticker name (e.g. HUTCHISON)
  3. A list of company short names will appear.
