ECON 3700 - Writing as an Economist (Spring 2024): Writing Guides

This guide is designed to meet the research writing needs of upper undergraduate (like you!). It also discusses writing in a more general way. Chapter 1 has a good section on the principles of clear, cohesive and coherent writing. The examples are mainly from economic literature.

This guide for UG economics majors aims to introduce you to some of the basic practices and conventions of writing about, and conducting research in, economics. It offers advice & also samples of effective writing. The emphasis is on research papers, but much of the advice applies to any kind of writing about economics.

Offers guidance on designing & completing a research study, which is beyond the scope of this course. But, you can find useful advice on: identifying a topic and narrowing it down to meaningful questions (Ch 3), using the literature (Ch 4-5), citing sources, and drafting and revising the paper (Ch 16). The appendix also has a citation guide.

Developed originally for a nonfiction workshop at Yale University, this is a well-regarded general guide to writing clearly and persuasively by a well-known journalist and writer.

Mainly aimed at writing research papers, but it has some helpful advice about note-taking & avoiding plagiarism (Ch 4) and the process of argumentation (Ch 5). Note: this manual uses Chicago style for notes and formatting, not APA.
