This guide answers questions frequently asked at the HKUST Library.

How can I get my course readings?

Did your professor assign a book for your course? It may be available in "Course Reserve"!

  • Reserve materials are available for short-period loans (3 hrs, 3 days) or non-course materials (7 days).​
  • Find your assigned readings by Course Name or Instructor. (e.g. SOSC 1850 or Luo Qiong).
  • Some reserve materials may be accessed electronically via the Library Catalog.
  • Check Course Reserve information

How to find course reserve materials:

 

 

How to place a hold for reserve materials?

You may place a hold on 3-day and 7-day Reserve items online.

You may place a hold on 3-hour Reserve items by going to the Reserve Counter and making the request in person. Items will be held for 15 minutes.

Can I renew reserve materials?

Yes, you can renew the 3-day and 7-day Reserve items.

But, after you return the item, if no one has requested it, you may check it out again.

How to put course materials on Reserve?

Instructors may place library books, lecture notes, journal articles, and personal books, etc. on Reserve for courses (3-hour or 3-day loan). Hyperlink of journal articles accessible at the Library databases have permanent URLs and hence may also be added to E-reserve.

How to use E-Reserve to reduce course-pack costs?

Many journal articles and other assigned readings are available to the HKUST community via library subscriptions. The Library recommends that faculty send reading lists to Reserve before making coursepacks to prevent “double-spending”. How to make course packs?

The University's Media Technology and Publishing Center make course packs.

MTPC staff members clear the copyright with the Hong Kong Reprographic Rights Licensing Society ("HKRRLS") and coordinate the payment of fees to that organization.
